This Thibaut performance fabric with a leather strap and brass hardware was perfect texture and pattern for this kitchen nook. The child's artwork gallery wall brings whimsy to this family's cozy gathering spot.

Interior design layering isn't just about putting things in a room; it's the fundamental design principle that transforms a functional space into a beautiful, personalized home that feels right. It’s what makes a room feel complete, inviting, and truly lived-in, rather than looking like a sterile dorm room. By thoughtfully mixing elements across different sizes, textures, patterns, and colors, you build visual depth and create an inviting sensory experience. A beautifully layered room, much like a perfectly put-together outfit, is all about mixing and matching your furniture across big, medium, and small sizes. Think of your most beloved piece; that comfy sofa, your cozy bed, or the family dining table, as the essential grounding elements. Then, you bring in the medium-sized furniture and those smaller, special touches to complete the look and make everything feel just right. This thoughtful play with scale is what makes a room feel pulled-together and intentional. I really love that balanced feeling of scale, and I always make sure it works well with the practical flow in my designs. After all, feeling comfortable and having things work easily is essential. Yet, creating that layered look is much more than just planning the layout. Here are some simple, friendly tips to help us build a home that feels curated and truly expresses your personal vibe.

Bring in the Cozy: Let's Talk Texture

Texture is seriously key to breathing life into a room, especially if you love a neutral or minimal style. Layering texture means mixing materials that feel different to the touch. It's about creating a rich, inviting sensory experience. Try pairing the cool, sleek feel of wood with the soft, welcoming comfort of linen, or setting a shiny metal piece next to a plush, chenille-wrapped sofa. Things like rugs, throw pillows, blankets, curtains, and even the finish on your walls all contribute to that overall cozy depth. The goal is to create a lovely variety that introduces warmth and comfort…. a collected feel that just begs you to curl up and stay a while.

Pop in Some Personality: Pattern with a Purpose

Pattern is a fantastic way to inject some visual excitement. It’s the fun, energetic element in the room. The secret to getting pattern right is balance: be thoughtful when you pair a bold, "statement" pattern with other complementary fabrics that are more subtle or smaller in scale. Repeating a certain pattern or detail gently throughout the room helps everything connect and brings the whole space together. Maybe it's an ostrich leather wrapped bench atop an existing slate flooring and grasscloth walls. Bold tile set in an unexpected layout bringing a modern vibe with a classic product. Illustrating how we introduce pattern with things like tile, textiles, wallpaper, or some eye-catching artwork, adding depth without making the room feel too hectic.

Finding the right neutral shower and floor tile was tricky in this design as the star was always going to be the Mercury Mosaic green subway tile set in a horizontal stacked pattern to bring modernism to the room.

In our Part Two of the Layering series, I will discuss the role of color and lighting in achieving the design layering in your home.
